About the Organization

Created in 2008 and privately held, Harmac Pacific Pulp operates a Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill on the east coast of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, BC. Nanaimo Forest Products (NFP) Ltd., the owner of the Harmac Pacific trademark, restarted the mill with a single production line on October 3, 2008. Since that time the mill has grown to two production lines and a capacity of 380,000 tonnes of world-class pulp per year.

Key to Harmac’s success is the employee ownership model. Our employees are very active participants in the running of the business and have 2 members that they appoint to the company’s 6 seats on its Board of Directors. 

The future of Harmac Pacific Pulp is looking bright. Through extensive capital investments, the organization has made significant improvements to productivity and reliability. In addition, as of 2013, the installation has been complete of a 25 MW Green Energy turbo-generator which we currently use to sell power to BC Hydro.

About the Opportunity

Harmac Pacific currently has an exciting opening for a full-time Environmental Coordinator to join our team in Nanaimo, BC. 

This pivotal role is integral to the success of our environmental programs, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements and driving ongoing improvements in our environmental performance. Reporting directly to the Head of Technical Services, the Environmental Coordinator will play a key leadership role, contributing to both departmental initiatives and overall mill operations.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Administering environmental programs for effluent, air, and landfill permits
  • Ensuring compliance with government permits, regulations, and ISO 14001 standards
  • Maintaining and coordinating internal and external ISO 14001 Environmental Management System audits
  • Preparing and submitting environmental reports, including NPRI, ECC, BC GHG, MOE, and Environment Canada reports
  • Managing energy monitoring, public complaint databases, and resolution processes
  • Developing and recommending solutions to environmental challenges and pollution control
  • Providing environmental guidance and support for mill projects, operations, and troubleshooting
  • Coordinating Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) studies and staying updated on new analytical techniques
  • Presenting environmental performance, projects, and deficiencies to senior mill staff
  • Collaborating with government agencies, industry groups, union representatives, and the public to address concerns
  • Participating in daily management meetings and inter-mill initiatives to support environmental goals
  • Actively participating in the Departmental Safety Program and ensuring compliance with safety regulations

More About You

To qualify, you will need a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field and a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in environmental management, preferably in the pulp and paper industry or a similar industrial setting. In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and permitting processes, as well as a strong understanding of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems, will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Professional designation (e.g., P.Eng., EP, CPEA)
  • Experience with effluent treatment plant operations, controls, or optimization
  • Knowledge of Kraft pulp mill operations
  • Experience with Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) programs
  • Familiarity with air and water quality monitoring equipment and techniques
  • Proficiency in greenhouse gas reporting and energy management
